Spring News

March 1, 2008

The symbol of spring - asparagus - will soon be here! Hirsch’s will soon be picking fresh asparagus and will have it daily in our market. If you like asparagus, you’ll love our fresh picked goodness. All of our asparagus is picked by hand and snapped off above the ground, so nearly all of what you buy you can cook and eat! Whether your preference is for thick stalks, medium stalks or gourmet thins, all of our fresh stalks are tender. Asparagus is not only delicious but nutritious as well. It is high in Vitamin A & Vitamin C and is rich in Riboflavin & Folic acid (B vitamins). It also contains the minerals potassium and phosphorous, and contains no fat, no cholesterol and no sodium. One cup of fresh asparagus has just 36 calories. So, whether you like your asparagus raw with dip, steamed with melted butter or cooked in your favorite casserole, we hope that you will try our fresh asparagus this year.

Flowers & Vegetable Plants

To many people spring time means garden time and whether you’re a flower gardener or a vegetable gardener, we will have what you need. From flats of beautiful flowers and tomato plants to vegetable seeds, we will have a great selection of old favorites and new varieties. We will also have gorgeous mixed pots and great hanging baskets as well as the most beautiful potted geraniums around. We carry a broad selection of perennials, everything from Achillea to Viscaria and at least 60 others in-between. We also will have a number of different herbs in addition to strawberry plants, onion sets, seed potatoes and sweet potato plants.

Strawberries, Black & Red Raspberries

When the Strawberries ripen it must mean summer is here. The Strawberries will soon be waking up from their long winter nap. The long period of snow cover may not have been fun for us but was good for the strawberries. They will soon be in bloom and barring any adverse weather, we should have strawberries by the middle to end of May. This, of course, depends on Mother Nature - if it gets hot and stays that way, the strawberries will ripen faster. We will have fresh picked berries available daily in our market and we will also allow you the option to pick-your-own strawberries. If you would like to pick your own, please call our market for updated picking times and berry availability. Fortunately for berry lovers, strawberry season usually lasts 3-4 weeks, so don’t miss out!

Black Raspberries are one of the delicacies of summer. Our black raspberries usually ripen about the middle to end of June but the weather will be the determining factor. We are now taking advance orders for our black raspberries. They will be picked fresh daily in 1 quart containers. If you order them, we will call you when we have them ready. Black raspberries are in season for about 2-3 weeks so don’t hesitate or it might be too late.

Red Raspberries complete the early summer berry tri-fecta. Red raspberries will start to ripen about the second week of June and we will have summer reds for 4-5 weeks. Whether you like them on your cereal in the morning or on ice cream or in a pie, cobbler or over cheese cake, red raspberries are a taste tempting treat.
